You may be a smug bastard but I'm down with you being king if that's your first decree.

It certainly can, but for sake of raising a ruckus:

"It's pronounced JIF, not GIF." -- Steve Wilhite

Also non-moving images can sometimes be funnier, and take less time to load on bad wifi.

This man does his homework.

The best part is telling people that say "GIF" they've been wrong for 27 years.

It's mind bottling the gifs Swish has come up with. Has he ever used the same one more than once?

Hmm...well:

1) Sow = An adult female pig. Rhymes with "cow".

2) Sow = To plant a seed. Rhymes with "blow".

3) Sow = An acronym for a spell used in the game EverQuest. Rhymes with "____".

Looks like we're gonna have to phone up some former Verant employees and ask.

According to the people who have been saying it the right way for the past 27 years or the guy who said it the wrong way when he made it 27 years ago?

Well, let's dive deeper into this mystery (that's been answered 1,000 times over a period of 3 decades, no less)

Quote:
The creators of the format pronounced GIF as "Jif" with a soft "G" /ˈdʒɪf/ as in "gin". Steve Wilhite says that the intended pronunciation deliberately echoes the American peanut butter brand, Jif, and CompuServe employees would often say "Choosy developers choose GIF", spoofing this brand's television commercials.[5]

An alternative pronunciation with a hard "G" (/ˈɡɪf/ as in "graphics") is in widespread usage.[6] The American Heritage Dictionary[7] cites both, acknowledging "jif" as the primary pronunciation, while the Cambridge Dictionary of American English[8] offers only the "gif" pronunciation. Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary[9] cites both pronunciations, but places "gif" in the default position ("\ˈgif, ˈjif\").
Quote:
The disagreement over the pronunciation has led to heated Internet debate. On the occasion of receiving a lifetime achievement award at the 2013 Webby Award ceremony, Wilhite rejected the alternative pronunciation,[
