My wife and I are currently levels 17 and 18, we have 496pp as of last night. We are completely untwinked, these are our first characters on p1999, I'm pretty sure we have a good amount of $$ for our level.
Basically we never ever destroy loot or let anything rot. Rusty weapons, raw hide equipment, cloth, gems etc - we loot all and make merchant runs. Currently we're doing Rathe aviaks til we hit about 22ish, unless I finish Shovel of Ponz quest anyways and my pet gets beefy then we'll be hitting UGUK. I'm positive our route to 500p wasn't unique (collecting and selling *all loot) however when I played my first character on live I was SO broke. I'm positive the difference was that I was too concerned with being encumbered, and also played a melee character who couldn't gate to directly in front of the merchant. (i.e my wife is bound in front of a merchant in Lake Rathe so we drop all our loot on her, all our cash on me, she gates/sells, then boats back unencumbered). Also we're a mage/enc and have every single spell available to us, including all lvl 20 spells in our bags and still have ~500pp. Lastly we never have and I seriously doubt ever will buy items from other players considering we're INT casters. Our mana pools and INT only drive our kill speed, but will never determine survivability for us.

WK bandits drop bandit sashes that you can turn in for exp + bronze weapon which sells to the vendor literally right next to him for 1-5pp. As a gnome necro though you may need to kill a few gnolls before you'll be able to do the quest and even enter qeynos, but that just means you'll gain more exp. gnoll fangs will give you decent exp all the way to lvl 12, and by then you should be able to solo the bandits.
Stay away from the half-elf male, he's a nasty caster :P Finally, don't worry about your platinum. As a necro you won't have a real need to gear up until you decide to raid, really. So just save your money for spells and level as fast as you can. Once you hit lvl 50 you can farm all the money you need.

Never had much luck selling pelts. Seems like nobody is ever buying. They just take up room in my bank. BUY MY DAMN PELTS!

I will say one thing about belts if you plan to farm them just to make money you might be disappointed. You basically have to get lucky when someone rolls through with a level 1 toon to power level themselves on belts.
So If you can wait around for someone to buy them, than they are great I got impatient and just went and turned all my in. But I read you were a necro and I'm not sure if you can enter Kaladim and not get Killed =P

Belts are unreliable sales. Pelts are.
ALWAYS offer a dramatic lowball for anything someone is selling in EC. Pretend William Shatner is hovering over your shoulder mocking your sexuality for not offering low enough if you have to. Prices are retarded due to mudflation and an outbreak of ultra-geared twinks, so no one knows what any of the untwinked lowbie gear is worth because no one buys it. As a result, the minimum price for these items tends to be around 100p. Offer 10-20p (10-20% of asking). Seriously. Most people have no clue and are just throwing a number up there fishing for some ultra-twink who will buy their +2 STR rings for 50plat each. When you offer 5, they'll typically sell to you. If there's one thing I've learned in these types of games, it's that people want to be told what to do.

If you are on the Qeynos side of things and can't seem to make any decent plat, then I have news for you:
Rabid wolves Rabid grizzlies All located in the Qeynos Hills area. Take their NO-TRADE (diseased/putrid) pelts to the temple of life, inside the flying saucer, to Priestess Caulria. Trade them to her one at a time. She will cast cure disease on you (if you've been stuck with rabies for a while) and also give you a hefty bit of exp if you're under level 10. Especially if you have pelts en masse. Most of the time, if not every time, she will give you a Spell: Endure Disease which can be vendored for a little over a plat each. You already get a plat from the quest itself, so by turning in multiple pelts the pp really adds up. Don't forget that if you find a Fleshy Orb you can turn them in to the same person and she will send you on a quest to freeport. The turn-in there rewards you with a fine steel weapon which sells very nicely.
