Have you been on any other hikes that were comparable? Previously did half dome approx ten years back and currently looking to find options in similar difficulty range.
not specifically in yosemite but i regularly hike ~10-15 miles days at least once a month in my local mountains... usually about 4,000' of gain/loss on the bigger ones. started hiking seriously about 8 years ago and wilderness backpacking maybe 6 years

mountaineering is my main pursuit/hobby now so i have to keep a high base aerobic fitness year round... 3 or 4 nights a week i put on a 40lb weight vest and do a couple miles and ~500-1000' of gain/loss after the kiddo is in bed

Right on. It sounds like you are quite dedicated to getting out in nature and taking it all in.

What differences are there would you say between the normal hiking you do and wilderness backpacking?

Never been out in the bush in Alaska. But I did King Salmon fishing on the Kenai river. Possibly the most fun I've ever had fishing, including ocean salt water fishing adventures. Reeling those suckers in takes effort and time. When you finally get it to the boat you can be quite exhausted. It's been a while, but when I went you could only catch one-a-day officially with many park rangers patrolling the river. Rest had to be thrown back. Highly recommended adventure for those that like to fish.

I'm still very sad that covid killed the Alaska honeymoon we had planned. We even had a salmon fishing excursion booked. Probably all tourist trap stuff but I was looking forward to it.

Had to settle for a road trip to St. Augustine. Still got my Alaska Air credits though [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

Glad you enjoyed St. Augustine. Never been sounds like a fun spot. Highly encourage a reschedule of your Alaska adventure if you can. Visiting Alaska creates memories.

just trip length, really. hiking i just consider a 1 day pursuit, whereas if i'm wilderness backpacking, im out there for multiple days at a time with all the necessary gear in my pack

A man of the outdoors. Nice. Apologies for my initial response to your Yosemite trip that included something that didn't have to do with your adventure.

Thanks for posting. Seeing your pics brought memories back of my own Half Dome trip decade back.

Gonna do Emory peak in big bend. The area is actually cooler looking than I thought. Doesn’t compare to anything out west but we’ll see how it goes tomorrow
