I've been safe behind the gear near the pad/edge of the island, maybe it was a distance thing, although they have a large aggro radius

testing it again:
standing between the pad and the edge, no agro
walking around the entire pad, no agro
walking up to but not onto to the hill near the pad, agro
walking along the edge of the island behind the gear, no agro
walking toward the gear away from the pad, agro before getting half way to the gear.

seems to be their agro range isn't big enough to cover the entire island, so being near the edge is safe, but the gear doesn't seem to give you any cover at all. i feel like guides would have mentioned this if the only safe spot was such a small area. i don't see why the windmills on 1.5/4/8 and the hills around the zone block LoS but the gear doesn't, hopefully it gets fixed before next patch, since any guild without keys to 7 will be fighting on 6
