Some good advice in this thread so far, especially joining a guild and picking up some umbral/sky gear.

The only thing I would really add: get an Atramentous Shield/Noctivagant Blade. They'll help your tankability quite a bit which is really all that matters. In fact if you joined a guild and got full umbral, you could probably afford them by selling your current gear.
