Yes, this was implemented later.

History lesson:

On the emulator, all the newbie notes were wrong in the beginning; You got like iron rations & water, a latern and a backpack.

Nah, what come later is the what u said: bag, lantern etc. But that wasnt coming on you when u were dying.

It was not velious and kunark since i was already playing for a year when Kunark came up. I didnt look for proof about that, Its just something I remimber from 1999. But well, i dont really mind, its only for beginer. If nobody remimber it, too bad. They stoped to do that when they implanted the No corpse to loot until lev 10, if i remimber well.

Edit: a thing that i didnt do 11 year ago lol is read the manual that come with game (the blue one with the wonderfull blonde chick on cover) ... i still have it ... So about starting stuff ... Its really 5 food 5 water according to the picture in the book in the section where they talk about start.
