i am almost 100% positive in the old days he just stayed in the sphinx area circling around it.

On p99 though he circles around it and also comes to the HG area and does a circle around the plateau. He also DOES NOT despawn after 3-4 hours like hasten cycle. I have killed HGs for hours upon hours and he would not despawn. Once he is up i have never seen him not up untill a patch day. Thank god i play a druid and i just hit track and always kept him on it to make sure i knew where he was at all times.
