no i imagine we will see velious out in the next 6 month - year then influx of returning players, 6 month peak, decline, death of server. I mean really it can't go on forever nothing does realistically it is a great idea well executed wish I had heard of it in 2010 instead of the end of 2011 but still got some good time left I imagine =)

This. The server won't last forever without some form of expansion growth, be it legitimate or custom. It'll eventually stagnate and die. And wipes won't do the trick. In fact if anything that'll piss most people off more, especially if it's timed (no one is gonna do a damn thing on a server if they know a wipe is imminent in a week).

There's only so many people that know about, or enjoy, Classic EQ especially that still game. Even fewer that know of P99. Advertising the server (a difficult task to accomplish) can help a bit but it only delays the inevitable if growth is not being considered.

Let's just put it this way, Let's assume Velious drops 3 months from now, Then the staff hits the patch timeline about 5-6 months after that (up to the day before Luclin's release on Live) and stop. No growth from that point on and the server content stagnates. I'd give the server about 5 years max from that point before it completely dies, and that accounts for the in and out flow of players (old bored players leaving, or getting banned, and new players joining).

Eventually the server would have to build content of some form to interest people to come back or to stay. Preferably they would do so by taking each following expansion and rebuilding it, taking the base expansion and changing what the community generally disliked about that expansion to make it more "Classic". Examples being scaling down the hp of mobs in Luclin, countering item mudflation, removing books from PoK, removing Guild Lobby, removing Guild Hall, removing instances, slowing down the level cap changes etc. However, even that is easier said than done. Good luck getting anyone to agree on what pieces of the newer expansions get kept and which ones get struck from the game before release. Example poll:

Keep Bazaar in Luclin?: 500 total votes
Yes, I love leaving my toon afk all night to sell my shit at ridiculous prices. 37% 185
No, making a player into a lifeless npc Bazaar-jockey kills my immersion. 20% 100
I've hated all forms of felines in real life since 2001 43% 215

That isn't necessarily true. Look how many years later we are all here to play a classic version of this game? It has expanded way pass where we are but we are all here playing. Expansion isn't necessary. We may leave but others will take our place. I use to play rubies of even tide which never expanded yet people played it till they closed their doors.
Gms held custom events ever so often which was nice but didn't destroy the game with expansions.
In eq you can't really go past velious without things getting ridiculous looking. Mixed matched graphics, playable cats, beast lords, bazaar, books, nexus, playing on a moon, aliens. Eq became garbage and it would be ashame to take the one project out of all the possible servers you can play on that already has all that garbage and make it the same.
