The Titanium client has a sort of auto-brightening ultravision-like effect that kicks in outdoor zones when night falls. I also notice that if I log in at night, the world'll be dark for a couple of ticks until the game pops the brightener on. That's a client feature and has nothing to do with overall gamma settings.

You're quite mistaken Knotty. The Titanium client is a late 2005 era WoW-influenced version; the brighter night is directly a result of that influence. Remember this was the period when Sony's flagship was suffering mass exodus and the owners were desperate to try anything to stem the avalanche. This client wouldn't look the same on your old PC as the original game clients. I still use a CRT, for that matter, because LCD screens give me migraines.
