What was raiding like pre kunark p99?

I remember when there were less raid mobs than raid guilds, everything was poopsocked so much that I could smell it all the way in Canada, and isles 6 through 8 in Sky were completely trivialized with DA idols. But by no stretch of the imagination would I call that "fun".
