I'm the only one that would get hit by the AE in either place, as long as people are paying attention to the calls. At max melee range the healers could heal me from behind the pillar, while I tanked perma rooted nagafen, it wouldn't be any different then the stairs, the only reason we use the stairs besides easier CR, is fear sends you back down the stairs out of AE range, rather than towards him.
