You're thinking of this wrong. Don't try doing 50% damage to each mob, just kill twice as many mobs. It's still faster leveling than most other classes.

You can also try duoing. If your pet does 49% and your friend's pet does 49%, then a nuke that does 2% will not make either pet steal exp, since the pet hasn't done more than 50% damage.

I have tried duoing and am now heartbroken because of it. I can't go through that emotional turmoil again

This was my understanding of the mechanics, too.

But I saw someone the other day saying this: a solo mage could group with someone who is in a different zone, and the very act of being in a group would stop the pet from ever stealing any experience.

I doubted that, but he swore that his experience bar % was increasing by 2-3x at much per kill of the same mob by doing this than it was if he killed that mob ungrouped.

I'm pretty sure this was fixed after it was heavily abused on red99 (and not reported).

So ifyou are fighting a mob and let your initial pet do 60% damage, then chain cast let the other pet do 40% and let off a level 1 nuke, would you get full xp since your current pet has done less than 50%?
