Sounds like an cyber myth to me - might be dating myself here but I'm pretty sure that term was in use back in the day when text-only MUDs were the cutting edge of online gaming.

While I can't say when it appeared, I can vouch for what you say about MUDs. I played a lot of MUDs in the later part of the 90s and the term was certainly around and used regularly back then.

I played (and programmed) them in the late '80s/early '90s (I'm not that old, I was a young computer prodigy at the time) and I'm pretty sure even then we were calling downgrades "nerfs"
