Sparkle, you obviously never played a melee...
As soon as I figured out how, I made 4 text boxes that I run with today:
Messages: guild, group, tells, ooc, shouts, auc, say
My hits: # only
Hits on me: # only
Crap: everything else, songs, buffs, exp, faction, etc.
The # only for hits allowed me to make those chat boxes reasonably sized.

Majority of my time was spent as a warrior. I just never bothered with multiple boxes back then.
