Would chat channels be an acceptable replacement for /ooc and /auc, if we got them working?

Discuss.

Well the draw is that people would have to gather some place to trade/barter and that would defeat the purpose.

Although it would also be nice to not have to ignore illililllilllililiiiili every hour as well.

Definitely, but if it's going to be a nightmare to get the code up and running where it's stable...don't bother taking any additional time coding this, IMO.

It wouldn't change anything. But sure, why not?
There are people who want to get rid of global chat because of spam.
There are people who want to get rid of global chat because of the topics of conversation.
And then there are people who want to get rid of global chat simply because it changes the environment of the game. Although the population is still a little low for that. I would say when the population at peak hours is around closer to 1k+ and 400-500 on non-peak hours.

Waste of time. Whats going to happen, is everyone is going to join "/1" as opposed to building a social network, which is currently the problem with "/ooc" btw.

I'm not advocating people sitting in the EC tunnel to peddle and buy wares. However, in early EQ, you got to know people that could get stuff, were basically merchants, and they typically got added to a friends list when you got a good deal. There is NO reason not to put an auction house in game RIGHT NOW, as transactions between players are of a completely non social nature.

What I fondly remember is people building relationships within this game. Close ones at that. Not just drivel spouted forth in OOC (which has gotten way the fuck out of hand lately)

OOC shrinks the world and kills much of the social aspect of the game. If by social, you think I mean "chatting" you are a retard. (thats directed to everyone btw)

The lfg tool works. The /who tool works. You want to know where a friggin cleric is that is high enough to ress you? Send them a tell. You want to find out if a camp is open in LGUK, be creative, use the damn who command, and stop flooding ooc. You need info about something? Send that 48 pally a tell...

/OOC is not a good alternative to build social relationships in this game. It feels cheap, and its INTRUSIVE. You can say "turn it off then" but thats not really the point is it, as OOC is currently used to shrink the world, its wares, and its player base, to the point where I feel like I'm playing runescape with 500 other faceless people.

Oh, and Fin, no ones gives a shit as to your forum prowess and your epeen. This is a large enough concern to many players, there is a reason it keeps being brought up...

I remember doing JUST fine on Rathe with peaks of 3 to 500 players without ooc. I did not get online and do a who. I checked my friends list, and went from there. Large friends lists are whats going to keep this server going socially, not a cheap alternative like ooc, which is just an enormous horseshit chatbox to try and accomplish personal tasks.

I guess I just come from a different generation of people that don't need to be instantly gratified, and call their friends, or hang out, as opposed to texting them, thinking in some way that is real social interaction, and I'm "somehow" building a relationship with a fucking cellphone.

Basically hit the nail on the head. This same basic concept has been described several times only to be responded with something along the lines of "Stop beating the dead horse" or some stupid shit like that. (Its not a dead horse just because YOU say it is, Fin.)

There is one reason and one reason only why he wants to keep his /ooc.
Its obviously the only social format he attends on a regular basis besides the occasional trolling of forum threads.
Typical WoW kiddie.

I always thought chat channels took away some of the immersion factor and hope not to see them here.

Keeping global ooc is fine for now, and maybe revisit the idea (of global ooc) when we hit 1000 online peak (i.e. a few hundred non-peak).

I would really like to know WHY we need a high peak population in order to dump OOC? More players per zone? Are you serious? Will ooc become significant if there are 300 people in LGUK?

When there is 30 in HPH?

The concern here seems to be people wanting 3 things... Auction capabilities, resses, and groups.

Auctions I can see being a legit issue. Leave an auction channel, and if people abuse it, BAN THEM (I know that has its own set of reprocussions) but seriously, this is the main bitch and worry of players.

I see that this is primarily a gear related game now, even though gear and difficulty were never really the draw of EQ. This game is relatively easy once past the learning curve, and gear, well, we could talk about gear and how some here are still obsessed with that rush of a FBSS drop, but thats a whole different topic, especially after 10 years.

This game has always been a socially based platform, a deep one at that. Driven by other factors such as gear, yep, but mostly by relationships made in game. Once again, squeezing 5 of your closest friends into a small room with 495 other people screaming for their own personal gain at the top of their lungs, is only going to generate alot of noise and frustration.

Again, here it comes "if you don't like it, turn it off" yet that presents another whole set of problems to the player. With the rest of the server using ooc as a crutch, and making it nessecary to progress, gear, and such, what happens to the player that hates it? They become the little kid sitting in the corner of the room.

You know where my vote lies on ooc.

We're still on track to be up Friday, again as long as everything goes as planned with the setup and configuration of the server at the data center.

Additionally, we will be having a bonus XP week for 1 Week after the server comes back up. All exp gained from kills will be increased 50%.

How about making de mask attainable for this week as well. I liked that suggestion !

Give ogres/troll one last opportunity to attain something to shrink themselves ?
