Oh rock climbing is sweet. Do you have an indoor spot near you? I used to have a membership to one in my 20’s, but it was so expensive monthly. I love the concept, but I was never all that good being 220lbs. I did at least get the idea that you aren’t climbing with your hands, you are with your feet; your hands are just to hold you to the wall. I still remember my old instructor in a rock climbing class at college saying “you should climb the wall the way you would climb a ladder” 🙂

Yea outdoor climbing could be sketchy. I see people put thick gym pads down in a spot near the mountain I hike, if they are not belaying
I fell in love with climbing. We have indoor gyms with boulders and sport climbs. Yes they are expensive but if you can devote an entire four plus hours to be productive every time you go then day passes are the same per hour for most people who gym in the general population. Cheaper if you can afford a monthly and are close to one where it makes sense with your life. Everything else you said seems right from experience. But someone said the person who is having the most fun is the best climber. I definitely recommend a good bouldering gym for anyone who has the chance and is interested. So don't underrate yourself because being 220# and ruck fit in inhospitable conditions is a strength all it's own. Are there caves where you hike and do you ever run into people caving?
