You know what would have been a better punishment imo?

Delevel and wipe the plat as you did. But no suspension and no announcement when you do it.

Let the people affected be vocal in game to their friends and guildmates about the "bug" and rage about it on the forums.

Then drop the announcement a few days later and watch the lulz + humiliation ensue.
