Part of the classic experience.
Except major aspects of being a mage (eg. pet chaining) isn't classic either. Similarly, neither is the Hate safe spot, or one player monopolizing Mage epics for years.

Let's not pretend our existing system is classic ... when it isn't.

P99 is more classic than all other EQ servers on the market.

The original source code is lost, so we will never have a 100% classic server.

Nor can you expect people to play P99 the same way people played in 1999.

If you mean 'classic' as in era accurate, I feel like TAKP is way more accurate to it's era than p99 is.

I agree, but TAKP is lucky because they had a PoP era client they could decompile. That makes the job much easier to do.

P99 doesn't have a Velious era client they can decompile.

P99 is the most classic server on the market for the Classic -> Velious experience.

The TAKP folks already decompiled several 1999-2001 clients and Torven pieced together a timeline of changes he noticed in those clients. Oddly enough there was a lot of server-side logic buried in the Classic - Kunark clients, which I think stopped on one of the midway-through-Velious clients?

None of the info gathered from these decompiles has been used by the P99 devs.

Torven didn't decompile those until around 2017 I think. So P99 was already well established by that point. It's crazy to think Green launched in 2019.
