The Verant devs all but hated tradeskills. While virtually everything else in EQ (besides the graphics) was more or less a copy of DikuMUD, tradeskills were something new they added, which didn't have a precedent.

So, while they did add them, they were the red-headed step-child of EQ, because the devs were deathly afraid of players crafting things becoming more popular than killing monsters. Over time they realized those fears were unfounded, and from Luclin onward tradeskills got better and better ... but in the classic era they were borderline hated by the people who added them to the game.

TLDR; To the people whom ade classic EQ, having tradeskills suck was considered a feature, not a bug.
The real way to do it is to have monsters drop things that you craft into armor
