Masters of Orion (1 and 2) were great games though! I played many games of both, and even played the latter ("hot seat" style) with a friend.

If you haven't tried it, I'd also strongly recommend Master of Magic (DOSBox), Caster of Magic (a sort of fan-made 1.5 version, also on DOSBox) and the modern remake (it's not as good as the originals, but still fun). All are arguably rip-offs of (the original) Civilization, but they're different enough to still feel separate from both Civilization and Orion. In fact, Master of Magic feels a lot like Civilization crossed with Magic: The Gathering [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]
