Exactly.

Feelings summed up about AI and Machine Learning algorithms. Especially when engineering schools are training students in AI chip design - to join the industry and create the AI tools that will literally replace them in their jobs as AI chip designers.
I wonder if old dudes said this about Excel.

Yep they did.

I feel like you could replace "calculator" with "AI", and a lot of the concerns from the 1970's would seem perfectly relevant today.

This is a half-baked take. It's not a good analogy. Calculators have a specific purpose of doing math.

Large Language Models are capable of so much more than just doing math, or any one specific task. In addition, calculator technology was not the driving force behind the world economy - like AI chip design is.

Both were technologies that (irrationally) scared people into thinking they were going to ruin everything ... but ultimately both are just another tool.

Loramin. You are so out of touch. I made a point proving why your analogy isn't correct, and you just breeze right past it and restate your original, debunked point.

Was calculator design driving the world economy the way that AI chip design is? Did calculator technology cause market surges like we've seen with NVIDIA? (over a 1000% appreciation in less than 5 years - Stock went from $13 a share in 2020 to $170 a share in 2025)

The answer is no. AI chip design is currently on pace to be a TRILLION DOLLAR a year business in just the next few years.

Does anyone remember when Texas Instruments stock saw a 1000% increase because of calculator chips?? Again, the answer is no.

You, and everyone elses take about AI being just the new thing that sparks irrational fear is part and parcel of the problem. Some of it is irrational fear, like AI "taking over"

But part of the fear is completely rational, like companies being driven out of business because they can't compete. Not just because of the technology it produces, but because technology producers can't compete with giants like NVIDIA.

Its not rational at all, I am sure the computer industry hit numbers like that, and has put the same number of people out of work that AI will. It also created that many jobs.

This is printing the press all over again.

Remember when Jurassic park came out and there was a war against movies that used cgi instead of practical vex?

If I recall the practical effects artist for Jurassic Park when he saw the computer animation said that he was extinct and then Steven Spielberg put that line in the movie and we all were like ha ha ha that’s cool.

Yea, the plot to Jurassic Park is pretty much the plot to any new technology, including AI.

Again, a non-sequitur from shovelquest.

Your "gotcha" takes do not follow proper logical order.
