The people who helped code THJ, i think largely didn't realize what they were going to do with this. Supposedly Secrets had a lot of help with the code base, and she had no idea it would be used in this way. This is a few individuals fucking others over for some cash. Story as old as time.

My best guess? Tribalism, we are nice to the people we know/like. However, we are also quick to "other" someone that is outside our proverbial "tribe". You add in taking the path of least resistance is the most likely path for any living thing and being nice and considerate is a lot harder than being an asshole sociopath. Sprinkle in some online anonymity, and it's a recipe for people who are social rejects to come together to make the 'normies' miserable. A game like EQ just really makes these things easily come together to make a toxic landscape if not moderated heavily.
