Personally I think what we're seeing here is tantamount to suing Adobe for users creating images with copywritten characters.

Disney should sue an individual from making money with a copywritten character not the tool they used to make it.

If MJ pays a license to Disney, then they have to for everyone and they shut down.

If they cant use Disney, then they cant use anyone, shut down.

I see no way forward for generative AI if Disney wins this.

I'm split on it, because I don't think generative AI is essential for AI to develop, and I may prefer that instead of these programmers working on generative AI they work on a better calendar or Email system or something for me to use.

But on the other hand, I think the law that exists today covers this, and MJ is free from blame for what its users create. And we should see just how far this rabbit hole goes.

Disney should be suing anyone who publishes a image of one of thier characters, and that's my take.

It'd be like DBG shutting down EQEMU and all emu's because THJ blew up and made money. Targeting THJ is the right call there, while targeting Midjourney is the wrong call with this disney thing.

I wonder what the courts will decide! I feel like we're at a crossroads for generative AI! (In the west - China and Russia will take over the entertainment industry)

It scares me a little bit, to like, stop technological progress out of fear of anything, especially Disney's franchises.

Makes me feel like earth has reached "europe" phase, where we just sit around dumping shit out of windows for like 500 years.

Yeah this is about the "act" of creating copywritten characters, not reproducing and distributing copywritten material.

I really hate how the current law already protects Disney, but they just don't want people "doing the thing".

It's a scary precedent because that means there's a lot we "could do" that we wont be allowed to do as 2nd class (standard) citizens.

Also it's dangerous IMO for misinformation, to make humans think that AI art doesn't exist by shutting down the tools to use it. So bad actors can use it, and people will be more inclined to think it's real.

I see this as 2 paths we can take.

One, is the path theocracies and other dictatorships take. The other is the one that led to America, and freedom.

Disney says yes. Notice TV apps don't have copy paste and it's more obscured on mobile OS platforms. My android lost the ability to directly upload to imgur temporarily. And now the URL links are obfuscated. Look at the defunct flash API.

There will be "pro" "platinum" and elite content creator versions. Butt they will cost big $$$ and be gatekept by a series of rules. Disney will eventually adopt its own AI tools. So only Hollywood and the big media companies have unfettered access.

It's all about controlling information and propaganda. About controlling rights to publish and influence.

It's simply about power and control and protectionism.

Be a good slave and only consume Disney approved and internally generated AI slop.

You will never see true information freedom in your lifetime because humans are incapable of freedom from control and domination. It's built into your body instinctually. Those who liberate themselves and others die because they see the illusion that life as a human is.
