Everquest is a better game because the gameplay is FUN.

Just put me in a room with 9 skellies, and my spells, and I can be kept busy for 19 hours without a break.

Other games require you to be doing something to have fun. Do a quest. Meet an NPC. Go travel to a new place.

WTF, is the game fun? Or is it just chores?

EQ is a game about fun, with lots of ways to experience that fun.

It's competitors are games about lots of experiences, that are not fun.

This is the end of my TED talk.

Never played retail WoW so I won’t comment on that. My gripe about classic WoW isn’t about the quests, it’s about a lack of excitement that must be made up for in one of two ways (IMO): hardcore mode, or pvp servers

Pve server death is a slight inconvenience in WoW, and just like an author who is too scared to ever kill off a main character, this results in encounters that could cause character death lacking that edge-of-the-seat excitement. This is very much unlike EQ, where dying in particular spots especially alone could become a huge problem ultimately threatening the very existence of the character

I’ve never played hardcore WoW, but friends that have tell me that close-calls got their heart racing more than any game they’ve played in years. For me, pvp servers made up for the lack of pve excitement. Everything I was doing in WoW was for the purpose of being able to kill other players better

Mobs in general are far more dangerous in EQ especially at higher levels, and WoW tends to play on rails (stay in your lane in the zone until you graduate to a new zone), and hand-holds players in ways that EQ never did (although classic is far better than retail in regards to these problems)
