Iranians always seem to describe themselves as Persians around here. What is up with that?

1. Many ethnic groups in Iran. Don’t want to mistake for a genocidal kurd or a braindead Turk
2. Iran is definitely what we call the country, but we speak persian and are Persian

It’s like British vs English / Scottish / Welsh, except that “Iran” has a hugely negative connotation whereas “British” is either neutral or positive. 99% of Americans don’t even know what Persian is. One guy thought I was from Paris once
