I was a troll and I went to faydwer at like level 6 (I thought I was pretty much end game at that ponit) and when I was leveling in crushbone some gnome girl saw me and like ran and hid behind a rock said WHOAH! and then peeked around the corner because she thought I was an NPC and I remember it like it was yesterday.

Those are awesome kinds of memories. Not as cool as your story but, when I first got Morrowind, I was straight up scared to leave Seyda Neen cuz I thought a cliffracer was a dragon in the distance

I feel that I remember accidentally exploring the woods around kelthin before realizing I was lost for the first time.

My very first character was an Ogre Shadowknight.

I walked straight out into Feerott and was like "Aw fuck this, can't see shit"

Darkness was such a pivotal part of the EQ experience. Think about it, nearly everyone in the game starts with a lack of visibility:

*Humans, Barbarians, Erudites --> nightblind
*Ogres, Trolls, Halflings, Dark Elves, Wood Elves, High Elves --> permanently cloudy newbie zones with a lack of viewing distance
*Dwarves and Gnomes --> start in maze-like underground cities

Half-Elves that start outside Faydark are the only ones who didn't face extra visibility challenges, and even then there's still RAIN that happens.

I have some very similar memories of traveling around Azeroth in WoW at level ~20 back in 2005 or 2006 and thinking I was on top of the world. Those crappy green shoulderpads I had on my Orc warrior were d-o-p-e. My heart nearly leapt out of my chest when I saw a random night elf riding by on a saber mount for the first time.

Of course, I was like 10 years old and was utterly clueless, but those were fun times.

It's not target collision it's latency. The client and server are both trying to tell each other where you are and if the latency is high enough they can both be wrong and you'll end up where you oughtn't be.
