It's not a laptop with a separate graphics card by chance?
I had an issue for awhile where the driver settings were off, in a way that made my system use the on-board graphics instead of the card, and that made things unexpectedly choppy. Also, if you haven't recently upgrade your graphics card drivers: that's usually the first step on any graphics issue debugging checklist.
