Today, we all do. Most scientific research is funded by government grants (e.g., from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, etc.), companies doing research and development, and non-profit foundations (e.g., the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, etc.).

Yeah, you linked an article saying exactly what I just said. This article starts out by talking about research in general. If you keep reading, it says medical research is funded mostly by private companies.

So general scientific research is certainly done at Universities through grants, but actually creating a medical product to use is done by pharmaceutical companies.
