I think the term fake news turns people off because it sounds conspiratorial on it's face, the term should be "shitty journalism", but even that is kind of an insult to the term journalism just by it's inclusion.

Hundred years ago the popular words for the same problem were yellow journalism and muckraking. Hundred years before that, honor killing was still a thing and Andrew Jackson would gladly shoot you when you called his wife a whore. Media is one area where laissez-faire capitalism fails spectacularly since hyped-up crap outsells level (ie, boring) factual presentation.
