Hrmmm, seems more likely the case that it's some sort of quirk of that proc the epic has, those "shards of elemental power". You can see that the pet bashes in essentially the same round of combat (backstab shares bash/slam cooldown).
My guess is that on the killing blow the proc killed him or went off on the killing hit, and the number you get is either the proc damage or the melee swiing+ proc damage.
killing blows would sometimes show strange/buggy things, a result of how they coded the order of operations in combat and how they get relayed to the client.
