you've used pretty good logic, mage/necro/druid are excellent starter classes. if you aren't crazy about grouping, solo-wize, blue is easier, less crowded, far cheaper purchasable gear in the commons bazaar.
Don't go human as your first character, night vision is indispensible til you have the cash to buy an infravision item.
Don't go dark elf first character, faction is rough to deal until you know the zones well enough to avoid insta death
