I recommend saving up extra coin to buy Medicine Bags from the Shaman vendors in Oggok, Grobb, or Halas. They cost twice as much as Backpacks but only weight 0.4 while Backpacks weigh 3.0. Each storage container has eight slots and can hold large items.
