At the moment (since the last patch) it looks like Ranger might be the hardest epic, as currently trade skill combiners are very broken. I've seen a few reports of rangers getting most of their work deleted near the end of the quest.

Consider yourselves warned, rangerlings. Haynar has mentioned a hotfix is being worked on (and is being wrapped up with the variable skill caps fix).

Just wondering, what makes the mage epic so hard? Are the targets really difficult to find and kill or are the drops just super rare, or something else?
AFAIK each fight in the mage epic can probably be done with a single group (though probably not the same group for each fight), in that respect it is not so hard.

The 'difficulty' lies in obtaining the Mastery Staff of Earth; this is the 'planar fight' for the epic. This drops off one of the Hate minis, and rarely so at that. Now this may sound trivial; pop up to hate and cycle the name place holders every 80 hours and eventually you'll get your piece, right?

Well there is a problem, many forces will only go up to Hate if this mini is already up. People are not easily persuaded to go up to hate for the sake of killing PHers. Especially now Velious quest armor is out (hate armor is no longer very desirable at all).

The other problem is Hate is fairly commonly tracked and the respawn timer is slightly random, if you do trigger the mob to spawn, there is a good chance someone will get it before you (and, rub salt in the wound, try sell an MQ to the item you caused to spawn). Oh, and even if you spawn the mini, and get the pull, the vast majority of the time it won't drop the item you want.
