Elephants have evolved a dependence on bacteria in their stomach to be able to digest some of the things that they eat. Young elephants are fed their mothers poop to obtain these bacteria so that they can properly digest their normal diet.

So have we: mainly E. coli.

Without it, We get very very little Vitamin K, which is necessary to thrive.

We don't have to eat moms shit to get it (no accounting for taste), but it's basically the same principle.
