It could also be that everyone's just getting Crown of King Tranix confused with Crown of the Froglok Kings, which is a greater lightsource.

Pretty sure this is the case - it looks like all items have in their raw data an attribute simply called "light", which is assigned a value to determine its type of light source. For items that don't emit light the value is set to 0:
