Benjamin Franklin takes sides
On this day in 1776, the St. James Chronicle of London carries an item announcing “The very identical Dr. Franklyn [Benjamin Franklin], whom Lord Chatham [former leading parliamentarian and colonial supporter William Pitt] so much caressed, and used to say he was proud in calling his friend, is now at the head of the rebellion in North America.”

Franklin was an interesting character. If he knew all the trouble that was coming over this divide, I wonder if he would have still done it. I think he would. I wonder what he would say if he were here today, transported here from that exact day, watching his story unfold on a magic box thingy, and then seeing where we are today.
