what would be the point of thinking about the ramifications of things we can't begin to understand at this time?

it doesn't seem useful or even possible

Because this is the direction that technology is heading. Because it seems impossible now doesn't mean it's drawbacks can't be considered and they should be before the fork in the road arrives. I've not read the book itself, but I did watch a documentary on the author of "The Singularity is Near". The ideas exist already. It is just a matter of time now.

if we can't understand the technology itself, how can we understand the consequences of it?

this is fearmongering.

indeed even the sci-fi (not science fiction) mind you behind the Terminator universe isn't theoretically sound. There's much better examples of transhumanism than action sci-fi and debating with it is pretty dumb

I'd be more comftorble with colorful excerpts from Isaac Asimovs foundation series. Much less triggering and scary.

Ghost in the Shell is another gr8 one too :P

Science Fiction is the pre-cursor to real technology.

Take the replicator from Star Trek for example. We've been dreaming about an object like that for decades, and now we have 3D printing. It is only a matter of time till the tech is perfected and able to produce foods very quickly as in the show.

Just a single, small example of Sci Fi being a foreshadow of future tech.

Btw I own Ghost in the Shell 2. Both are great anime'.

Because it doesn't take transcendent thought processes to recognize the many creations of mankind that shouldn't have been created throughout history. Take those lessons and apply to future people. People don't change.

Thinking is good for you too btw. Trying to contemplate involved, future concepts is not in vain.

The problem is you want to use "The Terminator" as the defacto standard for what would happen when it's at best an entertaining piece of action entertainment, and not an actual study in depth on the subject to begin with.

You sound really intelligent right naow.

I didn't bring up Terminator. Pokeson chimed in with that and I'm just discussing the possibility of it.

All I said was that I believe if AI was created, it would probably not like us and that I believe it shouldn't be created.
