Pretty sure it was not long after Velious launched, or maybe even before - they added the /hitsmode command to the UI. It gave you a CLI method to move combat spam out of your main window and into a new window that you could define. You had to define the x and y coordinates, maybe width and height, and how abbreviated you wanted the text to be... e.g. the full 'You pierce a tundra kodiak for 40 points of damage.' could be shortened to 'Pierce tundra kodiak for 40', or even just '40'.

All removing buff timers essentially did was piss off the people that play by the rules. All the others will use programs and such that still display them.
