I often go to the p1999 wiki and look up items in the equipment section - I've been playing a ranger where I only use stuff that Ive looted, quested, or made - so looking at , say, a list of 1 hand ranger usable slashing weapons has led me to a lot of different zones and areas to try and obtain them.
It is hard to find much sub level 20 though. Back when the server opened ( and you couldn't just buy items ) I did the rabid wolves/bear quests in Qhills to farm plat to buy a full set of banded. I used a qeynos kite shield that I got off a guard, and a vendor bought Spear until my 20s, where I quested the testament of vaneer and kited the Bird guy in OOT and got the ebon war spear, and then began questing my Totemic set. Off the top of my head - That necklace quest is nice, I used it for a long time ( and even the summoned hammer ) I think you can quest some patchwork armor in halas? or you can try and make some yourself. I think theres also a wolf cloak quest or something in halals. The 2 people outside surefall glade have some quests for some leather items. Some hit point jewelry drops in the qeynos sewers I think... basically look up zones, and items found in them, and quests!

Newbie equipment!
Go on a quest for banded armor! You need to find another player to make the stuff for you. It may take some travel and finding ways to earn enough money [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.] Some other quests to get you started once you're past level ten: * Find Weligon Steelherder in Erudin and ask him about some Deepwater tasks. * In Northern Karana, a large grizzly by the name of Bristletoe roams. Occasionally one can get a nice jerkin out of his hide. You may want to be higher level to go after him. * If you're interested in cultural smithing, investigate Imbued Northman stuff. For lower than ten, try some of these: * The many bears in Everfrost Peaks yield a great many hides that can be turned into patchwork and more! Even if you can't wear some of what you make, you can always sell it. * Gnolls in Blackburrow drop quite a bit of armor a Barbarian Shaman can wear.
