Very good for pulling since the Eye of Zomm will aggro NPCs and you can move it around. So, it's like a re-usable ranged item that can also go around walls and shit.
Also pretty good for necros to be able to summon something to lifetap.
They were never that rare to begin with. They were very similar to Circlet of Shadow on live where you have a fairly common item where the people who understood the power of the item just farmed their own item. Them being lore and still easily obtainable is the reason that they weren't expensive until a long time after being removed from the game.
