I quit at Ykesha. I don't think it was because I particularly disliked the direction the game was going, I just didn't have any time to play any more. I think WoW vanilla came out, etc, which ironically, made me play as much as I used to with EQ back in the day. WoW vanilla was good. It just turned to shit. [You must be logged in to view images. I was that guy who played with old models because I refused to look at the ugly abominations that Luclin vomited on everyone. I didn't get the ride any mounts, but fuck it, I had Run 3, it didn't even matter.

Game moved on, I didn't. Played on and off until GoD, occasionally starting over on a new server. I was very casual on live, never raided at all, and starting with Velious EQ focused more and more away from the casual player (most of my friends quit within a couple months of Velious launch.) They tried with LDoN, but it was such a cheap and cheesy implementation that the shiny wore off after a month or so.

I remember people talking about some promotional deal where you could start out at L62 with 50 AAs several years (?5) back, so I logged in to the SoE website for the first time in years and checked my highest level character and sure enough he was L62 with 50 AAs. I didn't bother logging into the game itself.

Never did quit, just one day I was no longer able to play on my friend's account.

Played Halo and some Playstation games, then got into WoW. Think I forgot about EQ, actually. Didn't realize I needed it until I realized how bad WoW sucked (which was in WotLK).

WoW catered to today's give it to me now crowd and had no challenge to it what-so-ever. That is why it was so hugely popular. I find it funny the number of people here that cry about things in P99 that were not classic or that were the reasons they left EQ but claim WoW was great when it provided the same convenience and lack of challenge from the very beginning that they are crying about.

Lump in the cartoony graphics and it was a silly game.

At what point did you decide that all of WoW was so easy? After clearing AQ40 in classic? Killing Kael'Thas during TBC? After you got no lights during t8?

Yea damn them for adding in raid mechanics (mostly "don't stand in the stupid" but at least they tried), instead of the bring enough healers and dps zergfest that was classic EQ raiding.

Cartoony just like all the other warcraft games, damn them for keeping with their art style.

They meant well, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions: I *will* damn them for those mechanics because they make effective first-person gameplay almost impossible. EQ and its world was designed with the first-person camera in mind; Warcraft isn't and cannot be. In Warcraft the player has to be zoomed out just so he can see all the crap on the floor in the area around him. Then, so as to accommodate the use of third person as the standard view mode, interiors are made open and airy so as to provide space for the camera to pivot without clipping through walls. Because of this, small, cramped EQ-style dungeons like Guk or Solusek's Eye can't exist in that environment. Trying to build a complex dungeon with suitably large interiors results in a place so large and sprawling that most folks can't do it in a single gameplay session--thus explaining a major portion of why we've devolved to "dungeons" being little more than a couple of rooms connected by straight hallways. I don't think they intended that to happen, but it's the law of unintended consequences at work.

Trash mobs hitting like raid named is another ill-conceived idea that promotes single pulls over crowd control and therefore also promotes boring gameplay. Few people want to pull 4 or 5 monsters if any one of them will one-shot the enchanter then the healer without even time to react if someone accidentally breaks a mez. Stuff hitting for less, and looser tuning in general, is the very thing which allows recovery from sloppy pulls and the other sorts of emergent gameplay that make EQ's dungeons as memorable as they are.

With respect to the original thread purpose, I stayed with EQ longer than I should have--I permanently quit in spring 2004 along with a lot of other folks. I considered every expansion to make the game a little worse and if my friends didn't all play I probably would've quit a good 18 months earlier.
