The mage bolts were the same way.

You could line up on a mob without targeting them and hit them with the bolt. Also, if a tank was in the way, the tank would eat the bolt and you were out the mana. This is why the shock line of spells were the best raiding nuke due to the bolts being eaten by other raid members.

I vaguely remember this.

Boy howdy, talk about amusing when you go to kill a mob and a higher level one gets in the way.

It was also classic for mages to sometimes double hit with bolt spells. But yes, you had to be careful with them though because party members or even pets would sometimes block them, and youd waste a ton of mana.
