It's true, the guards are fair game for EXP, and only the city zone line guards are protected. But there's no reason to demean him over it just for Internet LOLs.
Kyosho, you are right about the area having a strange mix of red to green mobs for a level 6 with some blues and whites mixed in, so the guards can be helpful when you do aggro a red, but if you have to rely on the guards, then you need to move on if somebody is killing them. If you want to stay in BB, try using the guards at the docks instead.
The orc lift in Kelethin is probably a much better alternative, though. And you can probably find groups in Crushbone as a healer.
