This is not entirely true. If you are invis and you hand an item to and NPC it automatically breaks invis; however, if you are invis and quickly hand him the book you can still get the stein. The faction must take a second to update or something, I'm not sure. As a high elf mage I am obviously scowling, and he will just eat your item if youtry to turn it in with that faction.
