Yea, EQ's population really took a nose dive mid-GoD. GoD's difficulty plus bugs, sorta capped the WoW-exodus period.
I'd peg the peak sometime in there. Coincidentally, GoD was the last expansion with the classic zone graphics and engine.

GoD was under-appreciated, it was a bit too brutal on the group side, and a bit too buggy on the raid side. It got polished later and ended up one of their best expansions - but it never really overcame the problematic thematical issues (not that they fixed that in OoW really - DoDH did though). I did appreciate vanilla wow when I got to play through it. They did quite a few things right, but I always sorta disliked how all these games get muddled down so that soloing Timmy with no social skills can be uber. TBC wasn't a bad expansion, had alot of neat stuff. Think that was about the end though.
