That's not a balance restriction. Monks are not meant to draw blood, hence no pierce/slash.

The word on the street in Qeynos Hills back in 1999 was don't use slashing weapons on bears and wolves or else you will only get ruined pelts!

Wow, I had totally forgotten about this little tidbit until now. The funny thing is that it sounded so plausible at the time, I mean the game was crazy complicated why not put in code to ruin pelts if you used slashing? lol
