In my experience groups generally do not discuss loot and hints just roll FFA with /randoms on rare drops and alpha on quest drops. You will encounter many people who do not loot at all. I tend to play clean-up like aseth, looting everything on any corpse that has around a minute or less on the decay timer. Best practice is to ask how loot is being conducted when you join.
I hate autosplit and find many others do as well. Just my 2cp ^^

To the OP: need before greed is the exception, not the rule on p99. Valuable drops get /random. I would make a rule, that no one can win two items until everyone has won one, and to keep the crying to a minimum, an earlier winner can /roll to trade up their item if the item they won is of less value than the current item up for roll. This rule may seem sad, since on live years ago NBG was the norm, but there are players who will say they need an item, sell it the next day in ec, then be back in the same camp the enxt night, saying they need that same item. It's how people are today; I believe the kids call this "winning." Or maybe that was Charlie Sheen. Or Gorden Gecko. So, short version: everything gets random'd because you cannot trust people on this server to not actually sell the thing they say they need. At lvl 55+, I've seen a super rare 100k shaman spell go to a monk alt on a /random, even though there was a shaman main in group who needed that spell and had been camping it for a week. Welcome to p99. It is mellower at lower levels, though.

So a Monk wins Torpor when the Shaman in group needs it. Well, that monk can sell it and buy his entire epic MQ. This is why high value drops are never ever done via NBG unless between guild mates or good friends. How can you justly say the Shaman deserves his needed spell, over the Monk who needs to purchase his epic MQ?

I don't like the random everything rule in pug's, but now that I've thought about it for a few years (!!) it really is necessary on this server. Harsh but true, eh? Another argument for why getting into a solid guild of cool people, and doing guild groups when possible, is a whole other gameplay experience!
