Religion was never the best explanation available for any of those things. It's all about social conformity and maintaining a ruling class.

You have the benefit of centuries of knowledge accumulation to fall back on. If you could put yourself in the mind of an iron age person, you would understand that it was the best they could come up with on such limited information.
