Whether you joined for that reason or not, that is why the guild was created. Whether you are a greedy bastard or not, the guild was full of them. No one thinks that every single person in IB was a dick. The problem is the guild starts losing integrity when it struggles to keep a good number of decent people around.

The overall goal is to dominate, top guilds can dominate and still maintain a good vibe. In 99% of top guilds they will sacrifice the good vibe for dominance if they have to, which eventually leads to the end of the guild.

And that, in my opinion, is exactly what happened here. As bad feelings internally accelerated member turnover, bad feelings externally limited availability of strong replacements. Attendance plummeted making previous accomplishments impossible, morale followed and there was no mutual respect and friendship to hold the guild together.
