It's not a basic word, it's a very complex word. Besides verbal irony, which you were attempting and wound up with arguably ironic sarcasm, irony takes many forms. My favorites are situational and cosmic irony.

There are even semi-adopted conventions for punctuating irony and sarcasm because of their difficulty in literary usage.

But feel free to celebrate your ignorance with more sarcasm.

I attribute it to having just woken up, but I just realized how close "Alawen" is to "Alanis."
No sweetheart, it's not ironic; no, I don't think so.

Alawen, the meaning of irony is in fact very simple. It can be applied to myriad situations, which makes its uses very complex, but the meaning is very simple. It is a very close synonym to sarcasm, and many instances of irony are in fact sarcastic. I understand this is all very confusing for you. Have a great day!
